Dr. Michael Sumko is a distinguished board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive, muscle-sparing techniques for knee and hip replacements. His expertise ensures that 100% of his patients return home the same day following surgery, unless specific medical conditions require an overnight stay. Dr. Sumko’s passion for orthopedics began early, shaped by his extensive athletic background, playing at the high school, Division I college, and semiprofessional levels. Fascinated by the relationship between structure and function, he pursued a career in orthopedic surgery, combining his natural dexterity—honed through playing multiple musical instruments, woodworking, and automotive work—with his dedication to patient care.

He obtained his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed an intensive, high-volume orthopedic residency, where he developed advanced surgical skills. To further refine his expertise, he pursued a prestigious fellowship in minimally invasive total joint reconstruction at the Hedley Orthopedic Institute, where he later became a partner. Dr. Sumko dedicated over a decade to serving veterans at the Phoenix VA Hospital, where he earned the Prestigious Healthcare Hero Award for his exceptional contributions. His leadership extended to Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital, where he served as Chief of Orthopedics, established a Certified Total Joint Center of Excellence, and pioneered the Outpatient Total Joint Program to enhance patient outcomes.
